Updated On: May 05, 2016

The 2016 Terry A. Grant Convention

*The 2016 OPWU Convention was renamed the Terry A. Grant Convention by motion of the Delegates for 2016.

The convention was convened at 1pm by President Grant. Host local president Sigmon from Columbus gave a brief welcome and introduced the Columbus volunteers to the body. President Grant announced the guests expected and gave a welcome and personal thank you to the Delegates. He talked about the development of the Tri State Organization that he developed in 1987 with presidents Marshall (KY) and Massie (IN). He also talked about the Tri State Stewards school and how over 5000 stewards have been educated there. He expressed his wish to the new officers to keep the school intact and to strengthen the OPWU and Tri State Organization.

All OPWU officers were in attendance with one excused.

The rules committee report was accepted in total. Committee chair was Sherri Hocter. Credential committee report was given by committee chair Mary Sitko. 69 Delegates and 16 guests.

National APWU President Dimondstein spoke on the contract interest arbitration. He said that the Union member witnesses made an impact at the hearing. He believes we will have the arbitration panels decision by July.

The next speaker was Ohio AFL-CIO President Tim Burga. He spoke about the need for the Unions to band together so that their issues will be put in front of a larger audience for help. He stated it was his job to bring all of us into the fight as in the august 2015 rally in Columbus against the Koch brothers conference. He related to us how his home union saw postal workers stand with them on the SB 5 fight and that they would be there for postal workers. He went on to talk about the coming election and how the AFL-CIO was committed to fight with telephone canvassing, letter campaigns, neighborhood walks and anything else needed to win. H has only one agenda and that is for working people and their families.

The Treasurers report was given by Sec. Treasurer Semjonovs. The Report was accepted by the body.

Remaining guests that spoke were National Vice-president Debbie Szeredy, National Dir. Of Industrial Relations Tony McKinnon, National Auxiliary President Kathy Danek, National Asst. Maintenance Director Idowu Balogun, and National Sec. Treasurer Liz Powell.

Day two opened with guest speakers National Legislative Director Judy Beard, Central Region Coordinator Sharyn Stone, and Mike Macho Kentucky State President.

Next was the Constitution Committee chaired by Greater Cincinnati   President Mike Funk. Two resolutions were submitted for consideration by the body.

Res #1: Be it resolved that; the third (3rd) paragraph of article 6, Other Duties, Section 1 which reads, “the salary and benefits for the President currently in office shall be “grandfathered” at the rates prescribed in the OPWU Constitution & Bylaws as revised on 28 April 2007,” be eliminated.
