No News is Good News...

The title of this article is misleading.  It should really say "Sometimes no news is really just no news".  Of course this is in reference to the continuing, seemingly never ending debate on postal reform.  Congress continues to drag their feet on doing anything remotely connected to providing financial relief to the USPS.

The delay now has lasted more than FOUR years.  If there ever was an example of just how disfunctional Congress is - this problem is it!  You know that last year's Congress became  the least functional Congress in U.S. history and this year's one is on pace to be even worse.  I hope you remember this when you vote in November.

Darrell Issa (R-CA) keeps striking out in his attempts to privatize the Postal Service.  Even though he is the chairman of the House committee that has jurisdiction over the USPS, all of his proposed legislative changes don't ever get enough support to reach debate on the floor of the House of Representatives.

In the Senate there is not enough support of S. 1486 to bring that bill up for debate and possible passage.  That is because it is a bad bill that would do more damage than correct the financial problems facing the Postal Service.  The majority of the democratic caucus still favors Senator Bernie Sanders's bill that would actually provide the needed relief and enable the USPS to grow and prosper.  Senator Sanders bill is still in committee because the chairman of the committee (Tom Carper)  is the sponsor of S. 1486.

Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown is the original cosponsor of the Sanders Bill.  At a meeting in Cleveland last month I discussed postal reform with him and his honest response was - "I don't know when something will happen".  He is as frustrated as we are over this issue.

So, again - no news is sometimes just no news.  There is no progress towards postal reform and financial relief.  To me that is one sad commentary on our elected officials.  This is a non-partisan issue, one that every congressperson should support.

The struggle continues.....
