Today brings a double bit of good news for those of us with the Postal Service and in the labor movement.
First, on January 24 the Postal Service announced that it would postpone the second round of mail processing consolidations set to begin sometime next month. A spokesperson would not say when, if at all, the consolidations might return, just that they were being "postponed". It they decide to reinstitute the second round it would be announced 90 days ahead of time in the Federal Register.
The Department of Labor reported that in 2013 union membership stayed basically the same as 2012. Right now 11.3% of the total workforce are labor union members. That comes out to about 17.4 million workers. There was a slight dip in the number of public-sector union members, but that was overcome by an increase in private-sector union members.
Staying even might not seem like a lot to some people but it did end several years of declining union membership.
